Penguins are flightless birds.
diet
African Penguins mainly eat shoaling open-ocean fish (e.g. anchovies, sardines, horse mackerel & round herrings), but they will also eat squid & crustaceans. They obtain their water requirements from the fish they eat.
Penguins are excellent swimmers & spend most of their lives at sea. They have a top speed of around 20km/h. Adults generally roam with 400km of their breeding locality, but juveniles wander in excess of 1000km.
The distance they travel to find food varies considerably. On
Africa's west coast a typical foraging trip could range from 30 to 70
km. On the south coast, foraging penguins cover an average of 110 km
per trip. When they are feeding their young, they cannot travel as
far from the breeding colony.
An average dive lasts
about two and a half minutes, (usually about 30m in depth, but can be up to 130m).
