Boy crushed to death in Caravan Park

According to an article in the Cape Times on the 9th May 2006, a 7-year-old Panorama Primary School student was crushed to death by a tree on his birthday on Friday the 5th May, 2006.

The Fernandes family set up camp on Friday when a heavy downpour enveloped them. Alex Fernandes guided her children to their tent. A 12m tall Cypress tree fell on their tent and pinned Leandro Fernandes to the ground.

With the help of other campers the couple managed to free Leandro from under the tree. A car jack was used to lift the branches from his head, but the boy was unconscious never to wake again. An autopsy determined that the Leandro's neck had been broken in two places.

Johan Steenkamp, Swartland's acting municipal manager said that an evaluation of the condition of the park's trees would be conducted.

Leandro's body was transported from Mooreesburg to Welgelegen.

The weekend had been organised by the Challenger Childcare Centre in Monte Vista, where Leandro attended pre-school grade.
